HOW ARE BED BITES TREATED?
If family members have bed bug bites, clean the areas with soap and water immediately. Calamine Lotions and cold compresses will help with the swelling and itching. Taking antihistamines orally can help as well. If the bites do not clear up in 1 or 2 weeks you should see your Doctor or Dermatologist.
DO NOT SCRATCH BED BUG BITES!
Scratching can cause ulcers and infections like impetigo or cellulitis. When infections occur they should be treated by a Doctor with antibiotics. Impetigo is a medical diagnosis and the primary symptom is red sores that rupture and leak for days and then forms a yellowish brown crusty layer. Impetigo is a bacteria consisting of Streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus. Keeping these areas clean and telling kids not to scratch will avoid a trip to the Doctor. Cellulitis is swollen areas, rashes, and blisters. These areas may be tender, warm, or hot. Chills, pain, and fever may follow.
