Experts say the increase is likely due to more people traveling

Residents of Southfield and Oak Park are dealing with an unfortunate surge in bed bug infestations. Pest control companies say the rise in cases, which has also affected other Michigan cities like Flint, Grand Rapids, and Detroit, can be attributed to a post-pandemic increase in travel.

“People are moving around more and bringing these pests with them,” said a spokesperson from [Redacted]. “We’re seeing an alarming number of cases in homes and businesses.”

Bed bugs can travel in suitcases, clothing, and other personal items. The tiny pests can also hitch a ride on public transportation.

According to the Southfield and Oak Park health departments, the best way to avoid an infestation is to be cautious when returning home from a trip.

“Try not to place anything on the beds and couches when you enter your home,” said a representative from [Hi-Tech Pest Control]. “Vacuum any new or used furniture you bring in and practice good sanitation habits.”

The health departments also recommend hiring a licensed pest control service if you suspect bed bugs have made themselves at home.

“Indoor bed bugs are small, brownish insects that feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep,” according to a health department spokesperson. “Their bites can cause itchy welts and, in some cases, lead to secondary infections.”
