Ground nests are invisible until you step on them. Structural nests build inside wall voids, behind siding, and in attic cavities — often undetected until late summer when workers start appearing inside the house.

Late Summer Is Most Dangerous

Michigan yellow jacket colonies reach peak size from late July through September. Food sources are declining, weather is changing, and workers become increasingly aggressive without provocation. Any mowing near a ground nest in August becomes a serious sting risk.

Allergic Reactions Can Be Fatal

Yellow jacket venom causes anaphylaxis in allergic individuals — a potentially fatal reaction requiring immediate emergency care. Even people with no prior reaction history can develop sensitivity after repeated stings. Call 911 immediately for any severe reaction.

⚠ Ground Nests — Most Common, Immediately Dangerous

Yellow jackets build the majority of their Michigan colonies underground — in soil voids, abandoned rodent burrows, and beneath lawn surfaces. The nest entrance is a small hole, often no larger than a quarter. The nest itself can extend 12–18 inches underground.

⚠ Wall & Structural Nests — Harder to Find, Harder to Treat

Yellow jackets commonly establish nests inside wall voids, attic spaces, behind exterior siding, and under eaves. These nests often go undetected through spring — by August the colony may fill several feet of wall cavity with thousands of workers.

Nest Activity Signs

• Consistent flight pattern: Yellow jackets entering and exiting the same spot repeatedly
• Underground hole with worn ring: Small dirt opening with cleared radius around it
• Aggressive behavior near one spot: Yellow jackets dive-bombing unprovoked — you're near their nest
• Increasing numbers by late summer: What was one or two in June becomes dozens in August

Structural Nest Signs

• Yellow jackets appearing inside your home: Workers navigating inside walls near windows
• Buzzing sounds in walls: Active wall colony creates audible sound — especially at night
• Yellow jackets near a specific exterior gap: Siding seams, soffit edges, or foundation cracks used as nest entrances
• Staining on walls or ceilings: Dead insects accumulating behind wallboard cause discoloration

Queens emerge and begin building alone. Colony size: 1–100 workers. Least dangerous window — smallest colonies, easiest removal.

Colony growth accelerates. Workers forage aggressively. Nests reach 500–3,000 workers. Removal more complex — still manageable.

Peak danger. Colony reaches 5,000–15,000 workers. Maximum aggression. Ground nests during mowing are responsible for most Michigan sting injuries.

Workers die as temperatures drop. Only mated queens survive to overwinter. Structural nests can leave queens inside walls to start new colonies in spring.
