Work through these at your own pace before we arrive. Even getting through half of this helps.
The 4 Steps, In Order
Remove Bedding & Clothing
Start with anything fabric that's in or near the affected room.
- All bed sheets, blankets, and pillows
- Clothing from floors, beds, and chairs
Wash & Dry on High Heat
Heat kills bed bugs and eggs present in fabric. This provides temporary relief while you wait — the real elimination happens during treatment.
- Wash on hot water, dry on highest heat for at least 45 minutes
- Seal clean items in plastic bags until after treatment
- Do NOT wash items from other, unaffected rooms — this spreads bugs
Clear Access
We need to reach every surface to treat it properly.
- Make beds, furniture, and floor edges accessible
- Remove items from under the bed and nightstands
- Seal removed items in plastic — don't leave them loose
- Do NOT move items to other rooms — keep everything contained
Do NOT Spray Anything
Over-the-counter sprays push bed bugs deeper into walls and furniture, making professional treatment harder and less effective.
What You Don't Need to Do
❌ Skip These — They Don't Help
- Deep cleaning your entire home
- Throwing furniture away
- Spraying anything yourself
- Moving to another room to sleep
- Trying to get it perfect before we arrive
✅ Just Do These — That's Enough
- Remove and wash bedding from the affected room
- Clear access to beds and furniture
- Store clean items sealed and separated
- Leave the rest to us
A Few More Details That Help
Store Clean Items in "Tertiary" Areas
After drying, store clean items in clean spaces away from bedrooms and living rooms — a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or low-risk closet. Keep them bagged or in sealed bins until the home is cleared for re-entry.
Remove Covers & Plastics From Sleep Surfaces
Remove certified bed bug encasements, covers, and any plastic wrap from box springs, platforms, and mattresses so we can treat seams and surfaces directly.
Disassemble Sleep Surfaces for Access
Remove box springs and mattresses from bed frames and place them where technicians can easily treat them. If you have platform beds, loosen slats or boards for treatment access.
We Work With You — Not Against You
Some companies expect perfect preparation before they'll even begin. We don't. We understand every home is different, every situation is different, and not everything can be done perfectly. Our job is to work with what you have and solve the problem.
Common Preparation Questions
Correct. Hi-Tech saves furniture in virtually every case. Throwing items away without proper treatment rarely solves the problem and adds unnecessary cost. Our process is designed to treat your existing belongings, not replace them.
That's okay. Do what you can — even partial preparation helps. Call 248-569-8001 if you're unsure how much you've gotten done or what matters most given your timeline.
Plan for up to 4 hours out of the home, including pets, after treatment begins. We'll give you exact re-entry timing and post-care instructions at the visit.
Call us. We'd much rather walk you through preparation over the phone than have you guess. Call 248-569-8001 — we answer 7 days a week, 8:30 AM to 10 PM.
Proper preparation helps us treat more effectively in one visit, which is always the goal. It doesn't change your quote, which is based on the inspection findings — not on how well you prepared.
Get It Done Right the First Time
Preparation is important — but execution is what stops the infestation. We're here to help with both.
