Initial Call – Another Abandoned Bed Bug Job
A homeowner in Canton contacted Hi-Tech Pest Control after struggling with a severe bed bug problem that other companies had either declined to treat or failed to resolve.
The customer explained that the main infestation appeared to be concentrated in the living room couch. The couch was covered in a corduroy or herculon-type material, which is one of the most difficult fabrics to treat for bed bugs.
When we arrived, it was immediately clear why the customer had difficulty finding help. The couch had heavy visible bed bug activity, with insects spread across the fabric seams and deep within the textured upholstery.
Situations like this often cause companies to recommend throwing away the furniture, but that is not always necessary when the infestation is approached correctly.
Why Corduroy and Herculon Furniture Are Difficult
Certain upholstery fabrics create additional challenges when treating bed bugs.
Corduroy and herculon materials contain deep ridges and textured fibers that allow bed bugs to grip the surface very tightly. The insects can settle into these grooves and create what almost feels like a Velcro effect, making them harder to remove compared to smoother materials like leather or vinyl.
Because of this, bed bugs can accumulate heavily across the surface of the couch instead of hiding only in seams or internal frame areas.
This type of furniture often requires additional preparation before treatment can begin.
Removing the Surface Layers of Bed Bugs
The first step was not chemical treatment. The couch needed to be physically cleaned to remove the large number of insects covering the fabric.
Using a stiff brush, we began loosening the bed bugs from the textured upholstery. This process dislodges the insects so they can be removed before treatment begins.
Once the surface insects were loosened, a commercial vacuum was used to remove them.
This step is important because attempting to treat the couch while large numbers of insects remain on the surface can cause blood staining and runoff onto surrounding carpet or flooring.
Removing the insects first allows treatment to be performed more cleanly and effectively.
Customer Watching the Process
While this work was being performed, the homeowner stood near the front door watching the process.
As the brushing and vacuuming continued, bed bugs were being dislodged and thrown free from the couch fabric before being removed.
The customer later explained that simply watching the process convinced him that he had finally hired a company willing to handle the infestation properly.
He had been concerned that no pest control company would accept a bed bug problem of this severity.
Treatment of the Couch and Surrounding Areas
After the surface insects were removed, treatment of the couch and surrounding areas began.
The process included:
• treating seams and structural areas of the couch
• treating the couch frame and underside cavities
• inspecting nearby furniture and structural areas
• treating surrounding areas where bed bugs may have spread
Every couch and every infestation is different. The materials used in the furniture and the level of infestation determine what methods and products must be used.
The goal is always to eliminate the infestation without damaging the furniture whenever possible.
Successful Outcome
The homeowner was relieved to learn that the couch did not need to be discarded. With proper preparation and treatment, the furniture could be preserved.
By the time treatment was completed, the customer felt confident that the infestation had finally been addressed properly.
He explained that simply watching the cleaning and treatment process gave him confidence that the problem was being handled by technicians who understood how severe bed bug infestations develop and how they must be eliminated.
What This Case Demonstrates
This case highlights several important facts about bed bug infestations:
• bed bugs often spread into couches and living room furniture
• textured fabrics like corduroy can allow large numbers of insects to accumulate
• heavy infestations may require physical removal of insects before treatment
• furniture does not always need to be discarded when treated correctly
Each bed bug job is different. The materials involved, the location of the infestation, and the severity of activity determine the methods used to eliminate the insects.
