Bed Bugs in Couch or Sofa | Signs and Professional Treatment

Many people assume that bed bugs only live in beds because of their name. The reality is very different. Bed bugs will live anywhere that allows them to stay close to people while remaining hidden during the day.

Couches and sofas are one of the most common places bed bugs hide in a home. People often spend hours sitting on couches watching television, reading, or resting. For bed bugs, this provides a regular opportunity to feed while staying hidden inside the furniture.

One of the most difficult parts of explaining bed bug infestations to customers is convincing them that the insects are not limited to the bedroom.

Why Bed Bugs Frequently Live in Couches

Bed bugs prefer locations where people remain still for extended periods of time. While beds are the most obvious location, couches and recliners often provide just as much opportunity for feeding.

A couch contains many hiding locations, including:

• seams in cushions
• folds in fabric
• joints in the frame
• stapled fabric underneath the couch
• reclining mechanisms and foot rests

These areas allow bed bugs to remain hidden during the day while emerging when someone sits down.

In many homes, people spend several hours a day on the couch. From a bed bug’s perspective, the couch can become just as attractive as the bed.

A Common Misconception: “Bed Bugs Don’t Live on Vinyl”

Customers sometimes believe that certain materials prevent bed bugs from living in furniture.

One homeowner told us that bed bugs could not be in his couch because it was made of vinyl. He assumed that bed bugs only live in fabric furniture.

However, when the couch was inspected during treatment, bed bugs were discovered inside the couch frame and inside the foot rests.

The insects were not living on the surface of the vinyl. They were hiding inside the structural areas of the furniture where they were protected.

This is a common situation. Bed bugs do not need fabric in order to survive. They only need a hiding place close to a person.

Why Couches Can Be Harder to Treat Than Beds

Beds are usually easier to inspect because their structure is simple and exposed.

Couches and recliners are much more complex. They contain:

• multiple cushions
• internal frames
• hidden voids
• mechanical components in recliners

These areas make it easier for bed bugs to hide and harder to inspect every location during a simple visual inspection.

In fact, during many jobs the true level of infestation is not discovered until the treatment process begins and furniture is opened or moved.

The Challenge of Evaluating Bed Bug Jobs

When inspecting a home with large amounts of furniture, it is often impossible to determine the full extent of the infestation during the initial inspection.

Once treatment begins, that is when technicians often discover:

• which furniture pieces are infested
• where the main activity is located
• where the infestation likely began

This is sometimes referred to as ground zero, the area where bed bugs are most concentrated.

When Bed Bugs Are Found in Couch Foot Rests

In one situation, bed bugs were found inside the foot rests of a couch.

This indicated that the homeowner had likely been sitting on the couch regularly while the insects were feeding. Over time, some people stop reacting strongly to bed bug bites, which can make infestations harder to detect.

Because of this, customers sometimes believe the insects are only in the bedroom even though they are being bitten elsewhere in the home.

Vinyl and Leather Furniture

Vinyl and leather furniture can sometimes be easier to treat than cloth furniture because the smooth surface provides fewer hiding locations.

However, bed bugs can still live in:

• seams
• frame joints
• internal cavities
• reclining mechanisms

Even when the exterior surface is vinyl or leather, bed bugs may still occupy the internal structure of the couch.

Before Throwing Away the Bed

A common reaction to discovering bed bugs is to immediately throw away the bed.

However, beds are often easier to treat than couches or recliners. If other furniture remains untreated, the infestation can continue.

For that reason, it is important to evaluate all furniture in the home, not just the bed.

People often underestimate how much time they spend sitting on couches compared to lying in bed.
