Initial Call

We received a call about a yellow jacket problem inside a gym in the North Woodward area.

Normally, yellow jacket jobs are fairly straightforward. In many cases we can locate the nest, treat it, and resolve the issue quickly.

However, this job turned out to be very unusual.

Arrival at the Property

When we arrived at the gym, we were asked to wait near the front desk while staff members went back and forth into another area of the building.

After a few minutes we politely explained that we were not able to remain waiting for long periods because we had other customers scheduled that day.

Shortly afterward, a manager or franchise owner came to the front desk and introduced himself. It was clear that he was the decision maker for the business.

He explained that they had been dealing with yellow jackets inside the gym.

A PrPevious Pest Control Company Was Already On Site

As we walked toward the rear of the building with the owner, we noticed that another pest control technician from a national company was already there speaking with staff.

We explained to the owner that we normally do not get involved in situations where a property is already under an agreement with another pest control company.

The owner explained that the current company had already attempted to treat the problem multiple times and had not been able to solve it.

He also mentioned that another pest control company had tried before them, but the problem continued.

At that point he asked if we would at least look at the situation.

Yellow Jackets Flying Inside the Gym

When we entered the workout area the situation became clear immediately.

The gym had not been closed, and customers were still exercising inside the facility.

High above the workout area, hundreds of yellow jackets were flying around the bright overhead lights.

Yellow jackets are strongly attracted to light sources because they use sunlight for navigation. The bright lights inside the gym were confusing the insects and drawing them upward.

Fortunately, the lights were also keeping the insects high near the ceiling, which prevented immediate stinging incidents.

What Caused the Problem

After inspecting the building exterior and observing the insect behavior, the likely situation became clear.

The nest was located inside the wall of the building.

Another treatment had been applied to the rear wall area, which likely disrupted the nest. When the colony was disturbed, workers began escaping through structural openings.

Instead of exiting outside, many of the insects were forced into the interior wall space, where they eventually found their way into the gym.

Once inside, the bright overhead lights drew them upward and kept them flying near the ceiling.

While this prevented immediate stinging incidents, the situation was still extremely dangerous.

Yellow jacket colonies can contain thousands of workers, and stings inside a public gym could easily lead to injuries or allergic reactions.

The owner looked at the situation and asked a simple question:

“Do you understand what the problem is, and can you fix it?”

The answer was yes.

He immediately said:

“Go for it. I need this solved now.”

Locating the Nest Entrance

Our trucks carry onboard power equipment, which allows us to handle unusual situations quickly.

We moved the truck to the back of the building and began inspecting the exterior wall.

One of the previous pest control companies was still on the property and approached us briefly. We knew them professionally and had always had a good working relationship.

After a quick greeting, we continued the inspection.

Using a ladder, we located the actual nest entrance behind a high exterior lamp fixture.

Even from the ground we could see constant yellow jacket traffic entering and exiting the opening.

The insects essentially showed us exactly where the nest was located.

Treatment Procedure

Once the entrance was located, treatment began immediately.

The first insecticide used was designed to travel deeply into wall voids and hidden nest areas. Using a compressor system, the material was forced into the opening so that it could reach the nest even if it was located deeper inside the wall.

This type of insecticide spreads easily through the colony and attaches to the bodies of the worker insects, allowing it to move throughout the nest quickly.

Within minutes the colony begins to collapse.

A second treatment using high-energy pyrethrins was then applied for rapid knockdown of active workers near the entrance.

This step is especially important in situations where people are present nearby, because it quickly reduces flying activity and minimizes the risk of stings.

Immediate Results

During the treatment, employees began gathering near the back door to watch.

After a few minutes someone said:

“They’re all dropping and dying.”

The treatment had begun working immediately.

Yellow jackets that were flying in and out of the entrance began falling as the insecticide reached the nest.

Securing the Entry Point

After the nest was treated, the entry opening behind the light fixture was sealed.

In most cases sealing the opening is not strictly necessary. Once the colony is eliminated, yellow jackets rarely attempt to rebuild in the exact same spot.

However, sealing the opening provided an additional layer of protection for the building.

Outcome

The yellow jacket colony was successfully eliminated, and the risk to customers and employees inside the gym was removed.

Situations like this highlight how dangerous structural nests can become when yellow jackets enter commercial buildings.

Yellow jacket stings can be extremely painful, and in some cases life-threatening allergic reactions can occur.

Because of that risk, it was critical that the problem was handled quickly and correctly.
