Carpenter Bee’s resemble Bumble bee’s but they have a shiny black bustle or abdomen. Bumble bee’s usually forage and fly near the ground and have hairy abdomens. Carpenter Bee’s are wood destroying insects and will nest in wood like, overhangs, facia boards, decks, doors, window sills, and trees. there are approximately 4 carpenter bee’s in one nest and can easily be located where they defecate and poop around their entrance holes.
If you have numerous bee’s hovering around decks and humans they are probably carpenter bee’s, and will continue to cause damage until they are completely eradicated. Males are very disturbing and will hover around humans all the time but cannot sting, however females can and will sting if provoked.
They lay dormant over the winter months and will create new holes in the spring and summer months for the increasing populations. They will forage for pollen from flowers to feed the adults and their young larvae.
